Some best start-ups involved in the AgriHack Talent program

Since the launching of the Pitch AgriHack Initiative, that aims at strengthening ICT innovation and entrepreneurship by youth in agriculture, some 700 young innovators and entrepreneurs took part in its hackathons and start-up contests. These beneficiaries had the opportunity to be involved in other CTA activities and those of its partners (Apps4Ag, Plug and Play events, etc.). The best start-ups involved so far have benefited from about USD 1 million (investment and grants from various national and international parties).Here are brief notes on some of the best start-ups involved so far in the competitions of the AgriHack Talent Program of CTA:

The final stage of CTA’s Pitch AgriHack West Africa competition took place at the 7th African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF 2017), on 7th September 2017, in Abidjan. The winners of the early stage category, efarms – a Nigerian-based online networking platform and Farmart Limited – a Ghanian online food market, were rewarded grants of €7,500 and €5,000 respectively. For the advanced category winners, Bayseddo – a Senegalese agri-financing platform and AgroCenta – an online marketplace for agricultural produce founded in Ghana, received €15,000 and €12,500 in funding respectively. On top of that, CTA’s partner, the Mali-based Suguba, offered two special prizes of each €2,000.

Winners of the 2016 Pitch AgriHack contest announced!

Pitch AgriHack, which aims to accelerate youth-led e-agriculture entrepreneurship for improved livelihoods and food security, unveiled the winners of the 2016 pitching event. The announcement was made during an award ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, on 24 November 2016. The competition was hotly contested with 25 finalists, selected out of 152 e-agriculture startups from across Africa and the Caribbean. Before the announcement of winners, finalists benefited from a training boot camp on 22 November at Ihub Nairobi, focused on offering successful business services in e-agriculture. The finalists were also coached on how to pitch effectively. On 23 November, they presented their services publicly before a jury and an audience composed of agriculture and ICT experts and institutions, including venture capitals.

The panel of judges consisted of McKenzie Slaughter, from Prohaus VC (venture capital firm, United States); Niraj Varia, from Novastar Ventures (venture catalyst firm, East Africa), Hervé Pillaud, from the Vendée Chamber of Agriculture (France) and Agreenstartup (agriculture startup competition); Jermaine Henry, from Devlabs (venture capital firm, Americas), Ralph von Kaufmann, from Hakika Ltd (UK), and Peris Bosire from FarmDrive (startup, Kenya).

Pitch AgriHack 2016 was organised by CTA in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the support of partners including the Centre for Agricultural Bioscience International (CABI) and mLab East Africa.

Une vitrine pour les femmes béninoises engagées dans l’agriculture

Malgré leur forte implication dans l’agriculture et leur rôle essentiel en matière de sécurité alimentaire au Bénin, les femmes rurales béninoises font face à une longue série de contraintes. Leurs systèmes de production demeurent traditionnels et archaïques, elles sont très peu intégrées dans les chaînes de valeur et surtout, elles n’ont pas accès à l’information à cause de l’analphabétisme et de leur méconnaissance des TIC. Les femmes rurales béninoises ont soif d’un changement social qualitatif pouvant s’opérer grâce à la contribution des médias, si davantage de visibilité est donnée à leurs activités agricoles.

En tant que femme et diplômée en sciences agronomiques, je me suis engagée à accompagner ce changement à travers la création et l’animation de mon blog « L’Agriculture au féminin », débuté en octobre 2013. À travers ce blog, je parle des différents types de productions agroalimentaires des femmes rurales (transformation agroalimentaire des noix de néré en moutarde locale ; transformation agroalimentaire du fonio ; transformation des noix de palme en huile rouge, etc…) majoritairement inconnues de beaucoup de personnes, à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur du pays.

Susciter l’intérêt

« Nous sommes une ONG à but social et nous aimerions faire don d’un moto-presseur d’huile rouge à un groupement de femmes productrices d’huile rouge de palme par extraction manuelle. Pourriez-vous nous aider à identifier un groupement de femmes pouvant être récipiendaire ? » J’ai reçu plusieurs messages de ce type. Cela depuis la création de mon blog, et surtout dès lors que beaucoup ont commencé à se rendre compte du rôle important des femmes béninoises dans l’agriculture, malgré le type de production traditionnelle, manuelle et pénible. Je me réjouis à chaque fois qu’un lecteur de mon blog s’intéresse particulièrement à un article et va jusqu’à rencontrer le groupement féminin agricole en question, la coopérative ou l’entrepreneur agricole.

Toujours par le biais de mon blog et dans le but d’aider les femmes rurales à acquérir et à partager le savoir et l’information agricole, une structure locale a pris contact avec moi pour initier les femmes rurales et les agriculteurs à l’outil informatique.

Interactions avec les jeunes et de femmes agro-entrepreneurs du Bénin

Les « YoBloCo Awards » ont été une grande source de connaissance, d’inspiration et de visibilité pour moi. À travers les différents blogs en compétition, je me suis aussi rendue compte de la grande diversité de l’agriculture dans les régions ACP. Après le concours, et surtout après le prix que j’ai gagné, j’ai pu davantage m’investir dans la promotion du secteur dans mon pays, en mettant davantage en lumière les actions et enjeux des jeunes et des femmes.

Grâce aux cas de succès de jeunes agropreneurs lus sur mon blog et au partage d’expériences avec ces derniers, davantage de jeunes et de femmes béninoises s’investissent aujourd’hui dans l’agriculture et croient désormais ou davantage à l’entreprenariat agricole. Un nouveau groupe de jeunes agropreneurs composé d’hommes et de femmes s’est également mis en place et lancera sous peu une plate-forme en ligne.

J’ai été invitée à intervenir dans différentes conférences. J’ai également eu le privilège d’organiser la première journée internationale de la femme dans une localité de Houègbo, au Bénin. J’ai pu interagir avec les femmes productrices artisanales d’huile rouge et de gari (farine de manioc). Je leur ai donné des conseils sur la manière de transformer et améliorer leurs productions. Elles ont ainsi pu augmenter leurs recettes.

Je me sens à présent très proche des femmes rurales, agricultrices, agro-entrepreneuses, de même que des jeunes. Je me sens plus utile pour ma communauté. C’est la plus grande retombée de mon blog.

Farming is in my genes, Blogger I am

I was raised in Kitale, Kenya’s breadbasket where I learned farming at first hand from my parents. I moved to Nairobi City when I was 18 for my studies but I still maintained a strong interest in farming. The experiences of growing up in Kitale inculcated in me a love for farming.

I am a good listener as well as a quick learner. People tell me that I am a hardworking and patient person. I used to have many hobbies but nowadays when not in my garden you’ll find me with my laptop. My short-term goal is to understand various ICT tools and technologies and use them to address rural development problems and in the long-run, I want to rise to an important position where I can drive reforms that will steer rural development.

My blog to share my ideas and engage

Through my daily experiences, I come across a myriad of ideas, some of which are still fresh and some which are hazy. To help myself clarify them, I write them down and by so doing and letting them see the light, I understand them better.

Since I was introduced to blogging by CTA under the YoBloCo awards competition, I blog on issues that are dear to me; women and youth in agriculture, the use of information communication technologies (ICTs) for development, environmental conservation and youth unemployment. I use writing as a platform for enhancing my thinking and sharing my thoughts in these areas. To present my thoughts to the world, I need to understand them and articulate them effectively for others to understand; if people can learn something from my insights and experiences, then I’m delighted.

Benefits of blogging and feedback

By posting my ideas out there, people either reinforce them, modify them, totally reject them or just take them in and muse on them. All these are worthwhile and I like just being seen to know things; being thoughtful is good for me.

Comments are the lifeblood of any blog, without which the blog is not alive. As a blogger, I welcome comments from my readers who don’t necessarily have the same opinion as me on a particular topic or subject. In fact, the discussion is often richer if we don’t agree with each other, as long as the interaction is mutually respectful.

I have had several requests from readers requesting to refer to my work on their websites, others have written to thank me for providing them with useful information as well as approving my work. On one of my posts, entitled "Minting money from fish" one reader left the following inspirational comment;

“………all is possible the fish farming is sustaining my daily activities and the good news is that the government is now assisting by supplying food for the fish and also providing market for my fish. Don’t waste time, accept challenge and achieve success.”

Benefits from YoBloCo

I started blogging a long time before the YoBloCo awards but I must admit that the experience with YoBloCo really enhanced my English and writing skills. The challenge of soliciting for information more frequently and writing quality articles was an enriching experience.

My lecturers at the university tell me that I write quality articles nowadays and that my English proficiency has improved. This, I attribute to almost a year of extensive researching and writing articles for my blog. The researching and writing has had a positive impact on my command of the English language.

Through the awards, I got a chance not only to share my knowledge but also to learn from my fellow contestants. I have had a chance to expand my social networks; the number of my friends and followers on social media has tremendously increased. Currently, my blog has 525 followers and the blog stats are at 8045. My Facebook page sharing the blog’s posts (Empowering 4 the future) has increased to 396 likes. The comments posted on my posts are an indication that my blog addresses issues relevant to the people. A comment such as “I truly admire your work. Plastics can also be recycled to make tile … mmmh it’s a business project that am working on currently” on the article The Plastic Menace shows that the plastics are a menace and my article is relevant.

Plans for the future

Prior to the YoBloCo awards, I used to farm up-country but I am now farming in the city commercially. I have rented a 1-acre piece of land in the outskirts of Nairobi, where I am cultivating vegetables such as nightshade, kales, spinach and cowpeas. I received my first cheque of KSH 30,000 in December 2014. I intend to diversify and convert it into a demonstration farm where other farmers can go and learn from it as lack of information is a major setback for many farmers. I therefore hope this will help fill the information gap existing among the farming and those intending to venture into farming.

A research study by Vodafone revealed that all households possess at least one mobile handset and this presents an opportunity for accessing information. My ambition is to start a Q & A messaging service that will enhance farmers’ access to information. Unlike most small-scale farmers, I can gain access to a lot of information and this service will enable farmers to access critical farming information which is important for successful farming.

Des «graines de l’information» pour promouvoir l’agriculture

Demandes de contacts, questions et remerciements sont de plus en plus nombreux sur mon blog « Les graines de l’info ». « J'ai lu votre papier sur la transformation de cacao en beurre par Monsieur Antoine. Je suis un Ivoirien, je voudrais faire comme lui. Peut-il me prendre en stage d'une semaine, ou me former à distance ? », écrit un internaute dans l’espace de mon blog réservé aux commentaires. Malheureusement pour lui, je n’ai pas retrouvé les coordonnées du producteur de cacao pour les lui transmettre.

Plus chanceux, Bonaventure Dedji, un Béninois passionné d’élevage de porcs qui lit également mon blog, se rend bientôt au Cameroun pour se former. Il y est invité par Etienne Désiré Ngweha Lipem, un éleveur camerounais qui a partagé son expérience en nutrition des porcs et entretien des porcheries dans un article que j’ai publié. Ce dernier avait pris soin de laisser ses coordonnées dans l’espace réservé aux commentaires..

Comme ces deux lecteurs, beaucoup d’autres internautes me sollicitent pour entrer en contact avec des producteurs ou d’autres acteurs du secteur agricole que j’ai rencontrés pour rédiger mes articles. Il s’agit de producteurs désirant apprendre de nouvelles techniques, ou de personnes qui veulent se lancer dans l’agriculture. Ils sont d’Afrique ou de sa diaspora, des Européens souhaitant vendre ou acheter des produits agricoles (engrais, pesticides ou machines, tracteurs) au Cameroun, ou des responsables d’organisations non gouvernementales qui désirent obtenir des informations générales sur l’agriculture camerounaise.

Créé en 2014, le blog « Les graines de l’info » vise à mettre en lumière l’actualité agricole au Cameroun et dans le reste de l’Afrique, en donnant la parole aux différents acteurs de ce secteur.

Tenir ce blog sur l’agriculture est pour moi une activité passionnante. Les nombreuses sollicitations de mes lecteurs alimentent cette passion. Au point où certains n’hésitent pas à me contacter pour des conseils agricoles. Récemment, un jeune éleveur camerounais m’a demandé de lui fournir des informations sur la qualité et la composition d’aliments des porcelets et des porcs à l’engraissement.

« Les graines de l’info » ne traite pas seulement d’informations pratiques sur l’agriculture ou d’actualité agricole. Il s’agit également d’inciter les jeunes à se lancer dans cette activité.

Ces articles font la part belle aux succès des entrepreneurs qui osent investir dans l’agriculture. Il s’agit ainsi d’inciter les jeunes à se lancer dans ce secteur porteur d’avenir. Car au Cameroun, comme dans de nombreux autres pays africains, les opportunités de promotion sociale sont limitées pour les jeunes : les économies urbaines sont en déclin et n’offrent que peu d’emplois.

Mon blog représente également une tribune qui permet de faire apprécier mon travail rédactionnel par mes confrères (journalistes agricoles) à travers le monde.

Créer ce blog a été payant ! En 2014, il m’avait permis de remporter le deuxième prix de la catégorie individuelle de la deuxième édition du Concours YoBloCo (Prix des meilleurs blogs sur la jeunesse et l’agriculture) du CTA.

J’étais déjà parmi les meilleurs finalistes en 2012, année de la première édition de cette compétition. C’est cette première participation qui avait suscité mon intérêt pour le «blogging» et m’avait permis de m’améliorer pour gagner deux ans plus tard.

Il n’y a pas que des questions et des demandes de contact qu’on reçoit en retour des multiples articles postés sur son blog. De nombreuses opportunités peuvent se présenter. L’une d’elle a été d’organiser un point de presse à Yaoundé pour le compte d’une organisation non gouvernementale intervenant dans le domaine agricole. Le directeur de la structure m’avait repéré sur internet à partir d’un article que j’ai rédigé sur les activités de leurs partenaires camerounais. L’évènement était grandiose, et j’ai été payé pour ce service !

Congratulations to all the winners!

The winners were announced by Philppe Couve, Jury member, assisted by Ken Lohento, in charge of the ARDYIS project. The results were announced in presence of participants of the conference, during a cocktail, and in the presence of various personalities including the Director of CTA, Michael Hailu. Apart from the cash prize won, each winner received a trophy, a certificate and various publications.

The top 12 bloggers and 3 other best participants of the competition were invited to attend the Fin4Ag Conference from 14-18 July 2014, which is proving to be a good learning and networking opportunity for them.

During a side-meeting organised by the ARDYIS project on 16 July in Nairobi, the young agri-bloggers shared their experiences about their journey through the competition and also had the opportunity to exchange with Phillipe Couve, one of the jury members, who gave them feedback on their blogs and how they can improve their writing.

CTA and its partners congratulate the winners, as well as all participants who entered the competition!

Launched in October 2013 at the Caribbean Week of Agriculture, the 2nd Edition of the YoBloCo Awards has been a very exciting journey for participants and the organisers. ARDYIS activities at IAALD Africa 2012

On the occasion of the 2012 Conference of the African Chapter of the International Association of Agricultural Information Specialists (IAALD) the ARDYIS project implemented by CTA will organize a series of activities, including the prize giving ceremony of the YoBloCo Awards and a workshop:

20 May: One day consultative meeting on: “Using ICT to strengthen youth opportunities in agriculture and rural areas”; impacts and lessons learned from the YoBloCo Awards as well as perspectives of participants and partners on ARDYIS activities will be discussed during that workshop;
22 May: Presentation of a paper on “Blogging to enhance agriculture: results and findings of the Youth in Agriculture Blog Competition (YoBloCo Awards)”, during the IAALD Conference; (Ken Lohento and Giorgio Bellinzas)
22 May: Prize giving ceremony of the YoBloCo Awards, during the Gala Dinner of the IAALD Conference
23 May: Organization of the second meeting of the Advisory Committee of the ARDYIS project.
23 May: IAALD Panel Discussion on e-Agriculture in Africa: Prospects, Challenges and Lessons Learned (Ken Lohento, panelist).

Some of these events are pre or post-conference events and other are part of the official conference activities, in partnership with IAALD Africa 2012 organizers.

About 30 participants will be taking part in ARDYIS specific activities. These include young bloggers from ACP countries (winners and runners-up of YoBloCo Awards, from the individual or institutional category), ARDYIS Project’s Advisory Committee members, representatives of CTA and of other organizations interested in youth, ICT and agriculture.

Participants are nationals of the following countries : Barbados (Caribbean), Belgium (EU), Benin (West Africa), Burkina Faso (West Africa), Cameroon (Central Africa), DR Congo (Central Africa), Fiji (Pacific), Ghana (West Africa), Italy (EU), Kenya (East Africa), Madagascar (East Africa), Mauritius (East Africa), South Africa (Southern Africa), Trinidad and Tobago (Caribbean), Uganda (East Africa), United Kingdom (EU) and Zimbabwe (Southern Africa).

Apart from ARDYIS Advisory Committee members’ institutions, organizations present include: Organization of the African Youth (OAY), FAO, ICT4D Jamaica, SangoNet, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), GIC Bellomar, Agribusiness Society of the University of West Indies, Farming and Technology for Africa (FTA), Shiriki Organization, Conseil Régional des Riziculteurs du Mono et du Couffo, Savannah Young Farmers Network (SYFN).

Participants sponsored by CTA (including YoBloCo winners and runners-up) are also sponsored to attend all sessions of the IAALD Africa 2012 Conference. The theme of the conference is “e-Agriculture for Improved Livelihoods and Food Security in Africa”. The conference will draw attendance from professionals and experts involved in the application of information and communication technology (ICT) in the rural domain, with a primary focus on agriculture (e-Agriculture), from both inside and outside Africa.

All these events will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 20 to 23 May 2012. The ARDYIS project was launched two years ago, in May 2010.

Concours du meilleur essai - CTA/NEPAD: Profils des gagnants et résumés des meilleurs essais

Dans le cadre de la remise des prix du concours du CTA et du NEPAD destiné aux jeunes sur les TIC et l’entreprenariat dans l’agriculture, qui a eu lieu à Addis-Abeba le 28 mars 2012, le projet ARDYIS a produit une brochure pour présenter les gagnants et leurs essais.

Les Prix YoBloCo récompensent 14 jeunes et institutions des pays ACP qui bloguent sur l'agriculture

Le Centre Technique de Coopération Agricole et Rurale ACP-UE (CTA) vient d'annoncer les gagnants de la première édition des Prix YoBloCo des meilleurs blogs sur les jeunes et l’agriculture.

Les gagnants dans la catégorie institutionnelle recevront chacun 3000 euros, alors que les gagnants individuels recevront jusqu'à 1500 euros. En outre, les lauréats et les finalistes sélectionnés (14 individus et organisations) participeront à une conférence internationale, leurs blogs seront promus et ils auront l'occasion d'être impliqués dans d'autres activités.

Les blogs choisis informent sur les initiatives et les défis des jeunes qui travaillent dans l'agriculture, sur certains problèmes actuels de développement agricole et rural rencontrés par les parties prenantes, et sur la façon dont les TIC peuvent être utilisées, ou sont utilisées, afin de soutenir la transformation du secteur. Grâce aux articles publiés sur leurs blogs, aux interactions avec le public, les blogueurs contribuent à la sensibilisation du public sur les enjeux de l’agriculture et suscitent l’intérêt des jeunes dans les pays ACP (Afrique, Caraïbes et du Pacifique).
Le concours des meilleurs blogs sur les jeunes et l’agriculture (YoBloCo Awards) vise à mettre en lumière les défis, les réussites et les difficultés rencontrés par les jeunes qui s’engagent dans l’agriculture et à encourager la production d’information et l’utilisation des nouvelles technologies de l’information par les groupements de jeunes agriculteurs et les organisations intéressées par la question des jeunes dans l’agriculture. Il a offert l'occasion de mettre en évidence les perspectives des jeunes dans ces domaines et de soutenir leur intérêt.

Les prix YoBloCo ont été une expérience passionnante pour les organisateurs et les blogueurs participants. De nombreux blogueurs font état d'un nombre croissant de visiteurs et de commentaires sur leurs blogs, lesquels suscitent intérêt et opportunités de collaboration.

Le CTA et ses partenaires félicitent chaleureusement les gagnants. Ils remercient tous les participants et les personnes (environ 3 000) qui ont voté et commenté les blogs et qui ont fait de cette expérience pionnière un succès ! Le concours a été lancé en juillet 2011 et 92 blogs ont été reçus. Pour la catégorie individuelle, les gagnants ont été sélectionnés parmi 15 finalistes retenus à la suite d'un vote en ligne. Le public a également commenté les 22 blogs institutionnels.

Le concours a été organisé dans le cadre du projet ARDYIS en collaboration avec : le Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), l’association Yam-Pukri, African Network for Agriculture, Agroforestry and Natural Resources Education (ANAFE), Pacific Agriculture and Forestry Policy Network (PAFPNet), Caribbean farmers’ Network (CAFAN), African Youth Foundation (AYF).
