The Durban AgriHack Challenge is now open: Win cash prize and develop your career opportunities!

After the successful implementation of two editions of the AgriHack Talent initiative, the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) is pleased to launch the Durban Agrihack Talent Challenge!

This event is organised in the framework of the Global Forum on Innovations in Agriculture in Africa (GFIA Africa) Conference, in collaboration with the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).  AgriHack Talent encompasses a series of activities at the heart of which a national or regional hackathon competition is organised, including capacity building, entrepreneurship support in ICT and agriculture, promotion of the products developed and of best young Talents.

The hackathon will be held in Durban, South Africa, from 28th November to 2nd December 2015. The event is aimed at promoting Youth ICT Innovations and Entrepreneurship in Agriculture in view to support youth livelihoods and  innovations in the agro-food sector.

Students and young professionals residing in South Africa are invited to create multi-disciplinary teams comprising of ICT and Agriculture specialists and register to compete in either: Category 1: Climate change; Category 2: Start-up or Category 3: Agricultural Magazine. The successful teams from the three categories can win up to 14,000 Euros in cash prize, throughout incubation or opportunity for consultancy after the hackathon! Capacity building will also be provided and best products developed will be promoted through various means!

For this new edition, teams involved in categories 1 and 3 will make use of agricultural and climate change open data. During the hackathon, experts will offer valuable advice to the competitors in areas of business management, ICT service development and agricultural challenges.

2015 Global Week of entrepreneurship

As part of the preparations for the Durban AgriHack Challenge and also to celebrate the 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Week, CTA will be organising online capacity building sessions during the week of 16th November on developing ICT services and products for the agricultural sector. Teams registered in the Durban AgriHack initiative will take part in these sessions.

The event is organised as part of the activities of CTA’s “Agriculture, Rural Development and Youth in the Information Society” (ARDYIS) project. Other partners of the event include the DUT incubator Invotech, the association Geekulcha and mLab South Africa!

A hackathon is an event during which computer programmers (and development stakeholders when required) collaborate intensively to develop an ICT application or platform addressing a specific challenge.
