The workshop was attended by members of FANRPAN Secretariat and coordinators of the 14 national nodes. CTA’s representative, senior programme coordinator, José Filipe Fonseca, made a presentation on “Advocating for Involving the Youth in Agricultural Value Chains”. He argued that while the agricultural sector needs young people for its knowledge and technology-based modernization and to increase its productivity, it must put in place holistic policies to attract and absorb the youth. Effective agricultural youth policies are those that take into account the fact that the bulk of the young population will soon be living in urban areas. Sound urban and rural policies are required to provide the youth with the opportunities (employment, entrepreneurship, decent salaries, career etc.) and capabilities (education, training, health, information) to engage in agriculture.
