What is ARDYIS?

ARDYIS is a framework of actions which aims to raise the capacity and opportunities of youth in agriculture through ICTs in ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific).

Its key activities include the Youth in Agriculture Blog Competition (YoBloCo Awards) and the AgriHack Talent initiative.

The Youth-Enabled Fish Farming ‪#‎AgriHack‬ (YEFFA) also known as AgriHack West Africa is now receiving applications from ICT innovators and developers who are based in one of the 3 focus countries: Nigeria, Benin and Togo, and are interested in working towards solving any of the persistent problems of the fish value chain in these countries.

New innovations continue to revolutionise the way we carry out fish farming. In an increasingly digital world, mobile solutions are also being called upon to tackle some of the challenges that the sector faces.

In line with this, the Youth-Enabled Fish Farming AgriHack (YEFFA) project was selected last year by CTA following the launch of its Youth call for proposals. The objective of the project is to use information technology to help solve challenges in the fish farming value chains in Nigeria, Benin and Togo. The initiative is led by Wennovation Hub (an ICT innovation centre in Nigeria) in collaboration with e-triLabs and Woelab (ICT innovation centres in Benin and Togo respectively) and the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND).

YEFFA is an adaptation of the AgriHack Talent Initiative that CTA has been championing, which aims to support ICT innovations and entrepreneurship in agriculture by youth up to 35 years old.

Agribusiness tv ok 600Sharing youth in agribusiness challenges and successes

In recent years, individuals and organisations have been advocating more strongly for the increased engagement of African youth in agriculture. With an ageing farming population, high youth unemployment and development of innovations in the sector, agriculture could potentially provide greater employment opportunities for young people. However, in order to encourage more youth to be actively engaged in the sector, agriculture has to be made more attractive, and stories of young people successfully participating along the agricultural value chain need to be valorised and shared.

Seeing is believing

The winners of the Durban AgriHack Talent Challenge, which took place from 28 November to 02 December 2015 in Durban in South Africa, were announced on 2nd December, at the closing ceremony of the Global Forum for Innovation in Agriculture, African Edition (GFIA Africa).

After the successful implementation of two editions of the AgriHack Talent initiative, the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) is pleased to launch the Durban Agrihack Talent Challenge!

The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), in collaboration with various partners is organising the Caribbean and Pacific Agri-Food Forum from 02 – 06 November 2015 in Bridgetown, Barbados.

CTA has an opening for a Jr. Programme Associate within the Policies, Markets and ICTs Programme. Extension of this position beyond one year depends on the availability of project funds in 2017.

Since its first occasion in 2000, the 12th day of August has been observed as International Youth Day, on the initiative of the United Nations. This day is aimed at drawing critical attention to the issues that youth have to face everywhere in the world. The day resolves around a certain theme. We are pleased that this year’s Youth Day celebrates ‘Youth Civic Engagement’. CTA and the ARDYIS project are proud to contribute to its commemorations.

CTA’s Agriculture, Rural Development and Youth in the Information Society (ARDYIS) project has won an international award in the 2015 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Project Prizes. After being shortlisted earlier this year, the ARDYIS entry was proclaimed winner of the e-agriculture category following a round of online voting and a review by a panel of experts of the three projects receiving the most votes.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is very often perceived as a male-dominated field. But CTA's experience through the Agriculture, Rural Development and Youth in the Information Society (ARDYIS) project, has shown quite a different picture.
