1. Problématique

Pour nourrir une population mondiale croissante, qui devrait atteindre 9 milliards en 2050, la production alimentaire devra augmenter d'au moins 70% (FAO, 2013). Augmenter la production alimentaire et prendre en compte le vieillissement de la population agricole exigent l’engagement accru de jeunes dans le secteur agricole. Ceci  est nécessaire, non seulement pour assurer la sécurité alimentaire, mais également pour soutenir le développement économique des pays dépendant fortement de l’agriculture.



And the winner is… Node420, from Jamaica. The team’s application, also called Node420, offers real-time weather analysis and automatic yield forecasts for farmers. The AgriHack Talent Caribbean contest, organised by CTA and partners, came to a close during the 13th Caribbean Week of Agriculture, held this week in Paramaribo, Suriname. The winning teams designed agricultural apps that can forecast crop yields, improve pest management and put farmers in touch with market outlets.

Eight Caribbean Technology and Innovation Hubs have been selected to participate in the Agrihack Talent Caribbean competition, which seeks to support the development of ICT innovations and entrepreneurship in agriculture by young tech talent. The event is being staged by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), in collaboration with institutions including the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and ConnectiMass Hub (cHub).

Hackathon launches apps for agriculture



Poor access to credit and savings, uncertainty about which fertiliser to use, difficulties in attracting capital and ensuring efficient farm management – these are some of the most intractable problems facing small-scale farmers in ACP countries, so addressing them can make all the difference between success and failure.

Agrihack Talent Caribbean! launched

The AgriHack Talent Caribbean initiative has been launched with the planning meeting that was held in Jamaïca. A Call for Expression of Interest will be launched on 2 August 2014 to the attention of Caribbean labs and hubs interested to partner on the programme.

Le jury a pris sa décision et les lauréats des Prix YoBloCo ont été sélectionnés. Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer ici les 12 meilleurs participants ! Les neuf gagnants seront annoncés lors de la cérémonie de la remise des prix du concours, durant la Conférence internationale du CTA sur le financement des chaînes de valeur agricoles « Fin4Ag » http://www.fin4ag.org/fr, qui se tiendra à Nairobi, au Kenya du 14 au 18 juillet 2014. Tous les douze meilleurs participants seront invités à la conférence.

25 participants, representing young farmer groups, regional and international organisations working with young farmers, youth ICT innovators/developers and entrepreneurs took part in a workshop entitled "Supporting Youth ICT-based Entrepreneurship and Innovations in Agriculture" , organised by CTA in the framework of the ARDYIS project on 19-22 November 2013 in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
