What is ARDYIS?

ARDYIS is a framework of actions which aims to raise the capacity and opportunities of youth in agriculture through ICTs in ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific).

Its key activities include the Youth in Agriculture Blog Competition (YoBloCo Awards) and the AgriHack Talent initiative.

The Technical Center for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA) and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Agency have joined forces in celebrating NEPAD’s 10th Anniversary. Within this context to reflect over the advance of the African development agenda, CTA and the NEPAD Agency are jointly organising a photo competition under the theme; “Looking at ICTs, agriculture, entrepreneurship and climate change in Africa through the eyes of women and the youth”. This contest also falls in the framework of CTA activities on Youth, Women and ICTs.

It is within this context of reflecting over the advancement of  the African development agenda, that the two institutions are jointly organising an essay competition under the theme; “Looking at ICTs and entrepreneurship in agriculture and rural development through the eyes of women and the youth”.

Youth are an asset for agriculture

Youth form a large proportion of the global population. They represent a valuable asset and an important potential labour force for countries in which they constitute the majority of the population. According to UNFPA, there are 1.2 billion adolescents in the world, of which, nine out of ten live in developing countries and 55% reside in rural areas. In many regions, young farmers are the future of agriculture and rural development. They are usually endowed with a sense of innovation, creativity and dynamism. Young women and men farmers are the entrepreneurs of tomorrow and can potentially overcome the food security challenge.

This contest is launched in the framework of the ARDYIS initiative which aims to raise youth awareness and improve their capacity on agricultural and rural development issues in ACP countries using  Information Technology.
